We are in the midst of an outbreak of meningitis. Fortunately not the most contagious kind, but an epidemic just the same.
Please pray for Olive, the two year old daughter of Olivier, a man who works with us here at the Bongolo Mission. Olive is the sixth patient with meningitis that we have treated in the past two weeks. Two of the patients have already died.
As we pray for Olive's recovery, we remember God's goodness to us. Claire had meningitis when she was born in Erie, PA, but by God's grace, she recovered completely without any of the common after-effects (such as seizures or hearing loss).
Treating meningitis requires high doses of antibiotics and steroids. We are running out of some medicines, and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of an overdue medical shipment from Germany. Please pray that it arrives in time.
We are becoming good friends with our next door neighbors. He is a surgical resident whom Joe works with often. He and his family are from Madagascar. Leaving ailing parents, and the comforts of home, to come to the Gabon rainforest has been stressful for them. The stress has contributed to him having a recurrence of bleeding ulcers at this time. Please pray for his complete healing, and for their (and our) continued adjustment to life in Gabon.
Good news--the Gabon presidential elections are over, and went peacefully enough. The incumbent has proclaimed victory by a comfortable margin. Unfortunately, since December 19, there has been renewed fighting in Congo-Brazzaville. We thank God for bringing us here for the time being. If we had gone back to Brazzaville, now we'd be refugees again.
The Bufutu are still around, but they're getting used to us.
Thank you for your prayers. We had a wonderful Christmas, and are having a Happy New Year so far. May God richly bless you and yours as you participate in this ministry with us.
In Him,
Joe & Becky Harvey & girls
